On July 25, 2008, the Chinese Embassy in India held a photo exhibition of the earthquake relief work in Sichuan, China in the Taj Palace Hotel in New Delhi. Indian Government officials, members of the Indian Parliament, prominent businessmen, scholars and media personnel attended the exhibition.

These photos show the devastation and enormous losses caused by the strong earthquake which measured 8.0 on the Richter scale and shocked Sichuan Province and neighboring regions on May 12, 2008. They also show that in face of the crisis, Chinese President Hu Jintao, Premier Wen Jiabao and other Chinese leaders came to the forefront, leading and directing the relief operations. The Chinese Government has taken a series of measures for disaster relief, and led the Chinese public in a united effort to minimize the damages, save and cure the injured survivors, prevent and control possible epidemics and release updated information on damages and losses. People from all over the country came forward with assistance. The international community reached out to China with a helping hand. Countless messages of sympathy, donations, rescue teams and relief materials flowed to Sichuan, China from all corners of the world, including those from India.

Thanks to the strenuous efforts of the Chinese Government and people of China and the tremendous support and assistance from the international community, the damage control and relief operations have achieved major victory. About 1.5 million stranded survivors have been rescued and resettled, over 2.8 million injured and sick have been treated, and over 9 million people have received emergency relief aid from the government. Water and power supply have resumed and transportation and telecommunication facilities have been restored.
