Wang Yi: China Hopes ROK Will Continue Properly Handling THAAD Issue
2017/11/22

On November 22, 2017, Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha of the Republic of Korea (ROK) at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing.

Wang Yi expressed that China-ROK relations have experienced twists and turns for some time, and both sides have reached some consensus on solving the issue of Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) in the current stage through a joint press release not long ago. China attaches importance to the ROK's positions, including the clear indication that the ROK will not participate in the THAAD missile defense system of the US and that the temporary deployment of the THAAD system will not harm China's security interests. There is a Chinese saying that "promise must be kept and action must be resolute." China hopes the ROK to continuously properly handle the issue. A few days ago, President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang met respectively with President Moon Jae-in, clarifying the direction for promoting the improvement and development of bilateral relations. I am willing to, together with you, further enhance mutual understanding and reduce differences to the utmost extent according to the consensus reached by leaders of the two countries, so as to make good preparations for bilateral high-level exchanges in the next stage. It is believed that your visit to China this time will certainly achieve positive results.
