Wang Yi Holds Talks with Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha of the ROK
2017/11/22

On November 22, 2017, Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks in Beijing with Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha of the Republic of Korea (ROK).

Wang Yi expressed that China and the ROK are unmovable neighbors. The development of China-ROK relations conforms to the general trend of history and the times, and is the common aspiration of the two peoples. Both sides should, on the basis of mutual trust and respect, ensure bilateral relations always move forward in a stable and sound manner along the right direction. Not long ago, both sides have reached some consensus on dealing with the issue of Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) in the current stage. President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang met with President Moon Jae-in respectively, charting the course for advancing the improvement and development of bilateral relations. China values the ROK's stance of having no additional deployment of the THAAD system, not joining the US anti-missile system and not developing ROK-US-Japan military alliance as well as its attitude of having no intention of harming China's security interests, while hoping the ROK will continue properly handling the THAAD issue. Both sides should work together to further enhance mutual understanding, and minimize differences to the utmost extent so as to create conditions for the full recovery of bilateral relations. The two sides should take the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations and the upcoming high-level exchanges as opportunities, summarize experiences and make strategic plans for the development of bilateral relations in the future. It is hoped that both countries should strengthen exchanges and communication in various fields and at all levels, enhance strategic integration and practical cooperation under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative, and beef up coordination and cooperation in promoting regional economic integration.

Kang Kyung-wha expressed that bilateral relations have achieved leapfrog development with fruitful outcomes being achieved from cooperation in all areas since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the ROK and China 25 years ago. After in-depth communication, both sides on October 31 jointly issued a press release on overcoming the difficulties which currently affect ROK-China relations. The ROK highly cherishes such gesture. The ROK is willing to further cement high-level exchanges and intensify people-to-people and cultural exchanges according to the joint press release and the consensus reached by the two leaders in the recent meetings, in a bid to promote early and comprehensive normalization of ROK-China relations and push for more fruitful cooperation outcomes in various fields.

The two sides exchanged views on the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue. Wang Yi reiterated China's relevant principled position, stressing that China and the ROK share common interests in realizing the denuclearization of the Peninsula and safeguarding peace and stability on the Peninsula through dialogue and consultation. It is hoped that both sides will continue strengthening strategic communication and make active efforts to this end. Kang Kyung-wha expressed that pressure and sanctions are not the goal, and all parties should make joint efforts to solve the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue through dialogue and negotiation. The ROK and China share the absolutely same goal on this issue.
