(2009/10/25)

On October 25, 2009, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met with his Thai counterpart Abhisit Vejjajiva in Hua Hin, Thailand.

Wen first asked Abhisit to convey the cordial greetings from President Hu Jintao and himself to Bhumibol Adulyadej, king of Thailand, expressing welcome for members of the Thai royal family to pay frequent visits to China. Wen said China-Thailand relations have stood the test of time and the changing international situation and both sides should make best efforts to carry forward, foster and develop the belief that "China and Thailand are as close as one family". He wished Thailand would enjoy social stability and economic growth and its people live and work in peace and contentment. Next year marks the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries and China is ready to work together with Thailand to boost exchanges at the top and other levels, further deepen bilateral strategic cooperation and enrich the strategic cooperation, the Chinese premier said. Thailand is an important trade partner of China in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and China and Thailand, economically complementary, enjoy a solid basis for cooperation. Both sides should take full advantage of opportunities brought about by the launch of the future free trade area between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to expand exchanges and cooperation in various fields and bring China-Thailand ties to a higher level. Wen expressed appreciation for the work Thailand has done in ensuring the success of East Asia summit meetings and said China is ready to join hands with Thailand to further advance China-ASEAN cooperation.

Abhisit thanked for the Chinese leaders' greetings to the king, hailing the smooth development of bilateral ties. He said the important consensuses reached during his China visit in June on bilateral cooperation are being implemented, pointing to the sound momentum of bilateral trade. He expressed Thailand's hope to expand cooperation with China in trade, construction of infrastructure such as railway, and tourism. Chinese enterprises are welcome to invest in Thailand, the prime minister said. Premier Wen at the meetings proposed a series of new suggestions and measures on how to enhance ASEAN-China cooperation and advance East Asia cooperation, playing an important role in pushing for the success of the meetings, for which the Thailand side is grateful. Thailand is also willing to strengthen coordination and cooperation with China in international and regional affairs and make positive contributions to promoting ASEAN-China ties, he said.
