On July 11, 2008, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met with visiting Mexican President Felipe Calderon Hinojosa in Ziguangge, Zhongnanhai. During the meeting, Wen thanked for the condolences and assistance offered by the Mexican government and people to the Chinese side following the devastating earthquake that hit China's Sichuan province. Wen said in recent years the two countries have been committed to deepening strategic partnership and cemented the basis for bilateral cooperation in all areas with fruitful outcome achieved. Both sides have also safeguarded rights and interests of a large majority of developing countries, exerting positive influence on South-South cooperation. China is ready to work with Mexico to continuously enrich the strategic dialogue and cooperation and realize peace and development. "The newly signed deal on promoting and protecting mutual investment is a landmark in bilateral ties," Wen said. Governments and businesses in both countries should step up exchanges and expand cooperation in areas ranging from trade to investment, industry and technology so as to promote economic growth of the two countries, Wen said. China hopes that both sides can give play to their respective advantages based on mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit, open up new cooperation areas and further expand trade and investment cooperation. Wen urged both sides to establish a mutually beneficial, win-win economic and trade relationship and push for all-round, in-depth development of bilateral cooperative ties on politics, economy, trade and culture. Calderon said his country is very satisfied with the development of Mexico-China relations in recent years. Mexico and China are both major world economies and China is the second largest trading partner of Mexico. To keep closer bilateral economic and trade relations and expand trade and mutual investment between both sides conforms to their interests, he said, adding that Mexico is ready to enhance economic and trade ties with China. The two countries are not only good friends, but also strategic partners and allies, Calderon said. "As China is growing rapidly, Mexico will grasp this opportunity to work with China so as to achieve common development," he said. During his current visit to China, Calderon reached broad consensus with Chinese leaders on deepening strategic partnership and witnessed the signing of several cooperation agreements on investment, economy, trade and humanities. "I hope these deals will bring bilateral ties to a new era," Calderon told Wen. Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and Minister of Commerce Chen Deming attended the meeting. |
