China urges World Bank to support developing countries

BEIJING, Mar. 18 -- China expects the World Bank under its new leadership will contribute more to international assistance, Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao says.

Liu Jianchao told a regular press conference Thursday in Beijing that China hopes the World Bank head will give more consideration to developing countries' suggestions to encourage sustained and healthy world economic development.

The spokesman said China will continue to cooperate with the World Bank no matter who heads the institution.

Meanwhile, China says it hopes the new president of the World Bank can give more support to developing countries.

Liu said, "We hope the new president of the World Bank will continue to do more for international development aid, and listen more to voices from developing countries."
