BEIJING, Jan. 4 (Xinhuanet) -- Civil organizations and institutions in Chinese cities have scheduled charity activities for the next few days to raise money for the tsunamis victims, while individuals continued to chip in to express their sympathy.
Officials with the Shanghai Charity Foundation said Tuesday that a large charity performance, co-sponsored by the foundation, Shanghai Red Cross Society, local media and government, will be held on Jan. 6 in the city. Preparation was proceeding smoothly and plenty of entertainmentand sports celebrities had promised to join the performance, said the officials. In Liaoning Province, northeast China, officials with the Red Cross Society of Shenyang City were preparing for a charity banquet on Jan. 9. The society would arrange auctions and an art performance during the banquet, and all the money raised would be sent to the tsunami victims, said Liu Xicheng, the society's vice-president. In Liaoning, the provincial Red Cross Society has collected a total of 1.07 million yuan (130,000 US dollars) over the past fourdays. In Wuhan, capital city of central China's Hubei Province, taxi drivers posted proposals on their website to collect donations. The Hubei Red Cross Society also reported a donation fund of 146,000 yuan (17,600 US. dollars) as of Tuesday morning. In Lanzhou, capital of northwest China's Gansu Province, peoplefrom all walks of life contributed a total of 300,000 yuan (36,000US. dollars) in two days. The figure would surely grow in the following days as more people finish their holidays and respond to the donation campaign,said Li Yutang, deputy president of the provincial Red Cross Society. Foreign diplomats in China also joined the Chinese people to donate for the tsunami victims. Jose T. Garcia, deputy consul general of the Mexican Consulate General in Shanghai, became the first foreigner in the city who went to the Shanghai Charity Foundation for donation on Tuesday morning. |
