Site of Peking Man at Zhoukoudian


On the Longgu Hill in Zhoukoudian 50 kilometers to the southwest of Beijing proper, the site of Peking Man was discovered in the 1920s. Some 500-600 thousand years ago, the Peking Man, ancestor of human beijings, had lived here. Scientific presumption shows the Peking men lived in this cave for some 300 thousand years and left their bones and living utnsils. The discovery of the first skull of Peking Man stirred the whole world. In 1987, the Site of Peking Man at Zhoukoudian was included in the UNESCO list of the world cultural heritages.
