Tibet starts wetland protection project


Sponsored by Tibet Autonomous Regional Committee, a wetland protection project named "Green Plateau Project" was launched in Lhunzhub County, Lhasa, capital city of Tibet Autonomous Region on Sept.27, 2010.

Influenced by the formation of Himalayas Mountains and the unique plateau climate, a large area of highland wetland came into being eventually with a comprehensive highland wetland ecosystem.

According to the wetland inventory data, Tibet owns over 6 million hectares wetland, accounting for about 4.9 percent of Tibet's total land area and 10 percent of total wetland area in China.

The central government of China plans to invest 310 million yuan to protect the wetland in Tibet.

At the launching ceremony, youth representatives announced the wetland protection proposal and called for nationwide efforts to protect the azure sky on the roof of the world.
